Dressing for a portrait sitting:

There are no definite rules to dressing for a portrait, however, it's best to avoid loud colors and prints. Neutral tones such as black, brown, white, cream, navy, burgandy and beige will not be jarring to the viewer. However, colors such as red, yellow, pink etc. convey moods and can greatly enhance the overall portrait. Keep this in mind when thinking about the mood you would like to convey. Choosing clothing with a classic style will insure that your portrait will not look dated.

Portrait Settings:

Consider your lifestyle and portrait hanging location when making the decision on a formal or informal look. Though outdoor portraits are normally considered less formal, there are some that are actually quite formal. Indoor portraits, although usually considered more formal can be quite casual. This is determined by a number of factors, including clothing, setting, posture and character of the subject.
