Biography

Jeanie Hendryx is a pastel artist with portrait and figurative works in collections all over the United States and abroad.

Growing up in South Dakota, she began drawing at a young age, using friends and family as models. After graduating from South Dakota State University with a degree in Journalism and a minor in art, she began work as an art director in an advertising agency. While staying at home with her two daughters, she determined to renew her studies in painting and has since studied with several extraordinary artists, including nationally known artists, Cedric and Joanette Egeli and Stephen Perkins.

The study of light and color is what most interests and challenges her. "I love the way the quality of light changes the color of the skin or hair, the way it describes the time of day or season as well as the lighting of an interior room or object. It can have such an important role in the mood of any artwork".

She is inspired by many artists, particularly Spanish artist Joaquin Sorolla, "He has an amazing ability to portray the color of light in a seemingly effortless way." and American artist Thomas Eakins, "His portraits show the personality of the subject, they were not in the typical formal pose that was common at that time. His sitters were often in a relaxed position as if caught in the moment."

Jeanie is a Signature member of the Pastel Society of Maryland and Maryland Society of Portrait Painters. She is also a juried member of the Pastel Society of America and Portrait Society of America. She has exhibited her work in several juried shows as well as her own solo exhibit and has had her work published in the Pastel Journal. Most recently she was selected for the Rising Stars exhibit at McBride Gallery in Annapolis, MD.

Jeanie is represented by McBride Gallery in Annapolis, MD and Benfield Gallery in Severna Park, MD.
